For many boats a simple depth sounder will suffice. Unless you are fishing or want to view the changing contour of the seabed knowing the depth of the water beneath the transducer may be all you require. Always remember that these devices tell you what is more or less directly below, they do not look ahead or to either side and won't, by themselves keep you off a shoal.
